I am writing to ask you to vote "Yes" on July 21st to advance the Top4RCV proposal presented by More Choice San Diego (agenda item 330, sub-item A). 

Ranked-choice voting at the general election is a simple update that gives us the option to rank up to four candidates in order of preference.  This gives us more choice and returns power to the hands of San Diego voters, where it belongs.   

Top4RCV is an electoral innovation that will strengthen our elections and our community.  By advancing the Top 4 candidates in the primary, voters are guaranteed to hear from a range of diverse candidates and ideas, campaigns will be more issue focused and elections will be more civil.  Candidates who win under Ranked Choice Voting are assured to have a wider base of support and voters are able to express their full and complete option at the polls.  Locations adopting RCV have seen a 7 to 10% sustained increase in voter participation among other benefits.

Our proposal is supported by a broad coalition including The League of Women Voters, Represent Us, FairVote, Community Advocates for Just and Moral Governance, San Diego Indivisible Chapters, Independent Voter Project, and many more.  All these groups recognize that Top4RCV will give San Diego voters more voice and more choice in their elections.

Our city is facing too many challenges to not consider every possible improvement to our elections.  As a city councilmember, you have the power to advance this important election reform for our community.  I hope you will vote to put the measure before San Diego voters in November.
